Strength training in The Hague for over-50s

If you are over 50, new to The Hague or simply not at home in a big chain gym, this page explains what we do and how to start. Our trainers speak English.

Het korte antwoord: we are a small coached gym in The Hague for people over 50. You train in a group of four to twelve, or one to one, and there is always a trainer on the floor. Our team speaks English, so you do not need Dutch to train here. A session takes thirty minutes, twice a week is the standard, and you start with a free intake where we look at what you can do and what you want.

Why this page exists

Several people have written to us in English, saying roughly the same thing: I want to get stronger, I do not speak Dutch well, and I would rather send an email than make a phone call.

That is a fair request, and it is easy to meet. Our trainers speak English, our intake can be done in English, and you can reach us by email instead of by phone if that is more comfortable. Nobody is going to make you struggle through Dutch while out of breath on a leg press.

What we actually are

A small gym in the Bloemenbuurt in The Hague, open since 2009, with around 535 members. Almost all of them are between 50 and 85.

There is always a trainer on the floor. That is the whole point: you are not handed a card and left to figure out the machines. Someone sets your weights, watches your technique and tells you when it is enough.

You train in a circuit of about thirty minutes, in a small group of four to twelve people, or one to one if you prefer. There are no mirrors, no loud music, and no twenty-year-olds filming themselves.

What training here looks like

Strength first. After fifty, the thing you lose is muscle, not fitness. Legs, back, chest, shoulders and core, twice a week, with weights set to what you can manage for ten to fifteen repetitions.

Thirty minutes. Long enough to work, short enough that you keep coming. This is the single biggest reason people stay with us for years.

Balance and mobility. Five minutes per session. Unglamorous, and it is what decides whether you are still steady on your feet at eighty.

Measurement. We measure where you start and check again later, so progress is something you can see rather than guess at.

If you have complaints or a medical history

Most of our members have something: a knee, a back, a shoulder, high blood pressure, diabetes, a hip replacement, a history of cancer treatment. That is normal here and it is not a reason to stay away.

Bring whatever your doctor or physiotherapist has told you, in English or in Dutch, and we will work within it. If something needs clearing with a specialist first, we will say so rather than guess.

We are not a healthcare provider and we do not offer physiotherapy or rehabilitation. What we do is the part that comes after: getting genuinely stronger, and keeping it up.

How to start

Come in once for a free intake. We talk through what you have done, what you want and what you are worried about, we measure where you stand, and you join a session to see how it feels. No cost and no commitment.

You can book that by email at info@clubvit.nl if you would rather not call, and you can say in your message that you prefer English. One of our trainers will reply and arrange a time.

Memberships are monthly and you can cancel with thirty days notice. If you are away for a long trip or recovering from surgery, you can pause instead of cancelling.

Veelgestelde vragen over training with us in English

Do your trainers speak English?

Yes. Your intake, your programme and your sessions can all be in English, and you can email us instead of calling.

Do I need to speak Dutch to be a member?

No. Our team speaks English and a number of our members are not Dutch speakers.

Can I email instead of calling?

Yes, at info@clubvit.nl. Several people prefer that, and it is no problem at all.

I am over 50 and have not trained in years. Can I still start?

Yes, and that is who we are built for. Strength training makes people stronger at 60, 70 and 80. You simply start lower and build up over weeks.

I have a medical condition. Can I train with you?

Most of our members do have something. Bring what your doctor or physiotherapist has advised and we will work within it. We are not a healthcare provider, so anything that needs medical clearance should be cleared first.

How often should I come?

Twice a week is the standard answer. Enough to get stronger, little enough to keep up.

Am I tied into a long contract?

No. Memberships are monthly with thirty days notice, and you can pause instead of cancelling if you are travelling or recovering.

What does it cost?

We discuss prices in person, because what fits depends on whether you want a group, a small group or one-to-one training. The intake itself is free.
